The Blurb
Ten effects in one magazine!
The magazine is gorgeous. Designed by Jules Philpott, a professional graphic designer, it looks and feels exactly like a real luxury travel magazine. But it is filled with miracles!
Take away someone’s ability to read!
A spectator seems gets more and more drunk just by reading the names of drinks! There’s a book test that sets a new bar for realism. The article on day trips from Paris really is about day trips from Paris. Articles on Tokyo, Luxor, Bali, Ibiza are really on those topics.
Reveal a thought-of word with randomly chosen scrabble tiles!
You help someone realize a dream vacation.
One spectator can read another one’s mind!
You can describe a thought-of picture and help someone who is tense to relax. Arthur Emerson’s “Pegasus Page” and Chris Philpott’s emotionally powerful “Unhypnotized” from Narcissus are both embedded in the magazine.
Odyssey also includes a secret vision tester.
The magazine has 108 pages printed on glossy 100-pound paper with a glossy laminated cover just like you’d find in magazines like Condé Nast Traveller.
Includes a 2-hour training video.
There are effects that are suitable for both close up and stage.
“F#%&ing Brilliant!”
– Banachek
“Odyssey is an incredible tool that looks like the genuine article and is packed with countless possibilities. It went immediately into my show at Hidden Wonders!”
– Shawn Farquhar
“Odyssey is now the ultimate version of Chris Philpott’s groundbreaking 100th Monkey ideas! What could be more organic than a luxury travel magazine stealthily loaded with routines and entertaining mental destinations? It is absolutely perfect.”
– Brett Barry
“I’ve been using the heck out of Odyssey in my corporate work and it’s been an absolute treasure for me. A magician recently asked how to get one and when I told them I wasn’t sure he offered me 300 for mine on the spot and I wouldn’t take it because I’m not doing shows without it anytime soon! Such an amazing tool!”
– Cole Blalock
“Being able to perform numerous effects with one magazine is genius. The audience participation and reactions are killer! It has the look and feel of a real luxury travel magazine. The mixed drinks routine alone knocked it out of the park!”
– Ron Gudel
Jheff's Guide
WHAT IT IS:
Specially printed full-color luxury travel magazine.
HOW ACCURATE OR COMPLETE THE AD COPY IS:
It’s accurate enough. It does assume that you are familiar with Chris Philpott’s 100TH MONKEY. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s visual technology that allows for dual reality within a single block of text. There’s more about it in the instructional video.
SET-UP AND RE-SET:
There is a little bit of set-up and re-set if you wish to use the Pegasus Page function which involves tearing out a page. It’s a one-time set-up and the performance re-set time is negligible.
WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED THAT YOU NEED OR NEED TO KNOW:
There is a set of pictures arranged alphabetically, but one word is not in order. At the time of this writing, this is not mentioned in the two-hour instructional video. As to the video, it lacks organization and is quite confusing at times. There are no PDF instructions, no quick start guide, and no overview video. You must watch the entire video to learn the ten effects and all of the features. There are plans to revisit and re-edit the instructional video, so these points will hopefully become moot, if not already. The good news is that the instructional video has nothing to do with your performance of ODYSSEY, nor does it have anything to do with the superb quality of this versatile prop.
SUITABLE VENUES:
Close-up, Parlor, Stage, Walkaround, Internet
JHEFF’S JUDGMENT:
Steve Thompson’s GLANCE is great, and my favorite of the magazine tests, but Chris Philpott’s latest, and arguably his best, release is even better. It goes beyond choosing words and allows images to be chosen and participants’ realities to be challenged. Despite having one minor error and the issues that I have with the instructional video, ODYSSEY can certainly now hold the crown of being called The Mother of all Magazine Tests.
