Introducing The BIG Prediction Writer by Robert Malissa of Philly Magic Tours

A classic mentalism idea, made lightyears better!

The Effect

Anyone or a series of people call out digits from 0 to 9. You write them down on a white board with a red or black dry erase marker in the order they shout them out. Clipped to the back of the board, in plain sight the entire time is a manilla envelope.

You detach the envelope, spin the white board around to verify the numbers you wrote are correct, and then reach into the envelope, and pull out a single 6″ x 4″ index card. You turn the card around and written in large numbers in black crayon is the correct number, a 1 in 10,000 prediction! If you had real powers, this is what it would look like.

This is a new system for predicting the answer to any question answered by your audience. It is best for small words, names, or numbers. The routines are only limited by your imagination.

Key points:

  • No stooges
  • Nothing electrical to worry about
  • The prediction can be seen from a distance as the numbers fill the index card.
  • The prediction is written in black crayon on the card in the envelope
  • The dry erase markers used can be either red or black.
  • Easy to do with a little practice
  • Has been used hundreds of times in real performances.
  • Leaves the audience stunned!

What’s included:

  • Everything you need, no arts and crafts involved!
  • 9″ x 12″ dry erase white board (fiber board, not cardboard interior)
  • 2 dry erase markers, one red, one black
  • 2 gimmicks
  • 1 ea. manila envelope
  • Approx. 20, 6 x 4 index cards to get you started, (you consume one each performance).
  • 1 spring clip for the envelope

Why this exists:

Robert Malissa runs “The Great Philadelphia Comedy Magic Walking Tour”. He needed an audience participation trick for everyone to do while visiting a large plaza. He asks the whole audience a trivia question and those that are correct move 1 giant step forward. He asks two more questions and those that know the answers move forward. The number of people in each row is counted and that is the basis for a 4 digit number that is written on the board, which matches the prediction in the envelope which has been in plain sight the entire time.

This is a worker routine that has been honed over hundreds of performances.

WHAT IT IS:
Effect with Props

HOW ACCURATE OR COMPLETE THE AD COPY IS:
The ad claims that this is a new system, and it really isn’t. The principles and methods are definitely well-known. What’s new is the gimmick and the design of it that allows you to deceptively use this well-known principle.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED THAT YOU NEED OR NEED TO KNOW:
The gimmick uses a principle found in classic two-phase prediction pieces—the kind with a subtle ‘double’ rhythm—and may take more practice than expected if you’re new to this method. It also requires coordinated finger work that some hands may find demanding.

SETUP AND RESET:
The setup takes a minute or so and the reset involves putting a blank index card inside the envelope.

ANGLES:
You cannot do this surrounded.

SUITABLE VENUES:
Close-up, Parlor, Stage, Walkaround, Internet

JHEFF’S JUDGMENT:
This is a straightforward and versatile routine built around a well made gimmick that lets you use a classic two phase prediction principle in a very practical way. It may require more practice than expected if you’re not familiar with this method, especially because it relies on coordinated finger work. The props are solid, the routine allows for a wide range of presentations, and the instructional video covers everything clearly. If you’re willing to put in the work, this delivers exactly what it promises and offers a strong, reliable piece of mentalism.
